Making SEO easy in DNN


With DNN Development, increasing the findability of your website is a challenge. Well, not exactly there are ways you can work around and build an excellent SEO friendly website using DotNetNuke. Over the years, DNN has grown and today there are a number of features that that help your with all your search engine optimization efforts.

As we know that content on your website is the root of it’s findability. Secondly the markup of the skins of your DNN websites also help you increase your site’s findability.

Here are a few tips to consider for the SEO of your DNN website:

Let’s begin with each web page. The web pages in DNN have their own settings. Within the settings you will find various attributes that you can define.

Page Name

While configuring settings for DNN, you are presented with a box to enter the Page name. This name will be used in the URL that is created. Ensure that you make use of your strongest keywords here. This is an opportunity to make your website more SEO friendly.

Page Title

This represents the title tag found on every web page. This is an important aspect of you On-Page SEO efforts. This helps search engines determine what the web page is all about. Ideally use your targeted keyword here. According to SEO best practices, the title should not be blank. Make sure it is minimum 70 characters.


The meta description is another setting that DNN allows you and needs to be written with the keywords that you wish to use on that page. It should be at least 160 characters long. Make sure that the description is relevant to the content on the page that you are writing it for. Another quick tip is that Google uses quotes as delimiters. So, do not use quotes in the meta description.


Under the page details of your DNN web pages, you will find space to insert keywords. Make sure you select the right keywords for each page of your website. Use comma separation for your keywords.

Page Header Tags

This setting allows you to add meta tags to the header section too. One such setting is the Canonical URLs. This helps identify content that you want the search engines to read and ignore the duplicate one. You can also add references to external java scripts here. This is also a great place to add the the link to an RSS of a blog etc.

Site Map Priority

You can create an XML site map for your website for search engines to read and understand the navigation and pages on your website.

301 Redirects

DNN provides you with easy ways to create 301 redirects for your pages.

Under Other Settings for Link URL, you can select from 4 different options:  None for no redirection, URL to enter the destination URL for redirection, Page to select the Page Name from the drop down list for redirection to, and File to select the File Name from the drop down list.

Performance settings

Caching and compressions settings are available for DNN to ensure that your site is well optimized for performance.
